About the artwork
Tate lists Ophelia as an 1851–2 painting by Sir John Everett Millais (Tate Britain, N01506). Tate’s “Story of Ophelia” explains that Millais painted the landscape outdoors by the Hogsmill River at Ewell in Surrey, then painted the figure in the studio. The subject comes from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
