Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted The Fall of the Rebel Angels in 1562. The original oil-on-oak panel is held by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels. It shows Archangel Michael and the loyal angels expelling the rebels from heaven while the falling figures transform into demons assembled from animals, insects, shells, armour, weapons and scientific objects.
The central figure of Michael remains controlled while the surrounding scene becomes increasingly unstable. Bright celestial areas contrast with darker hybrid forms below.
