About the artwork
Rijksmuseum dates The Threatened Swan to around 1650 and describes a swan fiercely defending its nest against a dog. The museum also notes that later generations interpreted the scene as a political allegory, and that this meaning was attached to the painting when it entered the Nationale Kunstgalerij in 1800.
